It’s NOT About Me (or You)

ITS NOT ABOUT ME CROSS

Philippians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

I’m an Aries.

Before you start judging (even though I’m judging you by saying you are judging me), I don’t read horoscopes. But, there was a time I did and what interested me were the personality characteristics of each sign. If I remember clearly, Aries are demanding, controlling, attention-seekers, natural-born leaders, proactive and what not. I wanted to point that out before I start off with what God put on my mind and heart this week.

Behind the door that leads to a corridor backstage in my church, Kingsland Baptist, there is a huge (and I mean HUGE) sign that reads “It’s NOT About Me.” I’m not sure of the story behind it (I’ll find out, promise) but the people that read it are usually the choir, worship leaders, worship pastors and people who make all the magic happen on stage during events or Sundays.

Why would someone put that there?

Isn’t a stage supposed to make a person stand out?

Isn’t that why it’s built a few feet off the ground, adorned with lights and beautiful sound?

It’s NOT about ME. For many reasons. One specific reason: It’s about JESUS.

Jesus stood on a platform, many feet above the ground, with the heavens shining down upon Him (and in one moment, closing in on Him). His platform was the cross. His crowning moment was made of thorns. And all the attention He was getting was from a crowd mostly filled with mockery and despise.

So, if you think that through, Jesus was on a stage that would be remembered forever throughout the Earth. And what is amazing about it, is that He had this huge imaginary sign in front of Him that read: It’s NOT About Me. God sent that sign to Him of course, hand-painted and all. He suffered up on that stage, not for Him, but for US.

Since I’m an Aries, I must be an attention-seeker, right? Yep. I am. Guilty. I struggle with my selfishness every day and if it wasn’t for God’s grace and discipline I wouldn’t be aware of it and strive to correct it. So, when I saw this sign at the door, and since I’m in the choir and band, I thought this was the perfect, constant reminder that I need to sync my mind and spirit with God and serve.

This doesn’t mean that in whatever we do we mustn’t strive to be great at it. God loves GREAT.

Colossians 3:23-24 says “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

This Easter (Día de Resurrección) remember Jesus died on that cross for YOU.

He forgave YOU.

He suffered for YOU.

He rose from the dead on the third day, for YOU.

And during His time on Earth, He also served people like YOU.

It’s NOT about ME. It’s NOT about YOU.

It’s about JESUS and how we can be like HIM every day.
